We took the opportunity to sit down with Natalia and ask her about her internship experience at Luminous and her aspirations for the future.
Who are you? What’s your story?
I’m Natalia, a 23-year-old intern at Luminous with aspirations of becoming a distinguished graphic designer and typography artist. I’m passionate about creating visuals and messages that not only captivate but also bring together transparency, beauty and functionality to make a real impact in our community.
As Bruno Munari said, “When the objects we use every day and the surroundings we live in have become in themselves a work of art, then we shall be able to say that we have achieved a balanced life.” This quote is one of the few that speaks to the heart of why I do what I do.
What inspired you to get into a creative role?
Creativity has always been a part of who I am. I’ve always been drawn to experimenting and pushing the boundaries of conventional techniques, blending different disciplines, like science and art, to explore new possibilities. I genuinely believe that design is at the core of everything, and by integrating diverse approaches, we can create stunning and meaningful work that communicates ideas transparently and positively.
What is a project you worked on recently that you enjoyed/or are proud of?
I really enjoyed designing the book cover, subsection divider pages and various typographic elements for the Association of Photographers (AOP) Photography Awards book 2024. The best part was creating the gradients for each title pageWe printed the photographs of all the Gold and Silver award winners onto tracing paper, grouped them by category, and layered them, illuminating them from behind. The resulting textures and gradients were breathtaking. Presenting this work to the clients and seeing their positive reaction was the cherry on top of an already fulfilling project.
What’s it like working at Luminous?
Working at Luminous is an inspiring experience, surrounded by a team of passionate and open-minded individuals. Every idea, no matter how unconventional, is valued, which creates a truly collaborative atmosphere. The design department has an incredible collection of books, and people often bring in their own books for everyone to explore, which adds to the creative energy of the space.
What advice would you give others starting out in the industry?
My advice to those starting out in the design industry is to stay true to your values and focus on what you love. It might feel tough when you face rejection, but there’s always a place for you in this industry. Trust in the process, and you will find yourself where you’re meant to be.
When do you feel most creative?
For me, creativity is a constant flow, influenced by my surroundings and emotions. I love a good challenge, but I need a calm, quiet space to really focus and allow my thoughts to come through with clarity.
