The promise and the pitfalls of net zero

In our thirteenth 'Luminous Spotlight Podcast', Rachel Madan talks with Marcene Mitchell, Senior Vice President, Climate Change, World Wildlife Fund, about net zero, nature-based solutions, and whether COP26 was really just more blah, blah, blah. This podcast is part of Luminous’ climate content series.

WWF is one of the partners in the Science Based Targets Initiative, which has recently released a new Net-Zero Standard, on top of its guidance on setting a science-based target. Yet the idea of offsetting remains controversial, and we still need to focus on critical, short-term emissions reduction goals.

Nonetheless, nature-based solutions offer a way to support mitigation, and help us adapt to climate change impacts. But they aren’t a substitute for emissions reductions. Marcene tells us why we need to change the conversation and our understanding of nature-based solutions, and what companies should do in the short term to reduce their emissions, including how to make the changes needed and report on their plans.
