Tell us a little about yourself
Hi! I’m Frankie, a design intern here at Luminous.
What inspired you to get into a creative role?
I grew up in a home where creativity was definitely celebrated. Both of my parents were in creative professions, so drawing, painting and crafting were part of my life from a young age – maybe this laid the foundation for my career path! Throughout school, art was what I really enjoyed. The classes were never a chore, unlike other subjects, so when it came to choosing my degree, it made sense for me to do graphic design. The idea of turning my passion into a profession is incredibly fulfilling and I do believe having a creative career is a privilege – it’s many people’s dream to have their hobby become their job.
What is a project you worked on recently that you enjoyed?
I had a lot of fun coming up with concepts for the Fedrigoni 365 brief. Fedrigoni provided us with a seed word (global) and date (25 March). The brief was to create a design based on these two things. After exploring various concepts, my idea was selected – using hands to show the numbers 2 and 5, representing the date. This concept tied into the ‘global’ theme, as hand gestures are often considered a global language. It was rewarding to see my idea come to life and be chosen for the final submission.
What’s it like working at Luminous?
Luminous has been such a great place to work. As an intern, I’ve found the environment here to be nurturing and I’ve had numerous opportunities to develop my skills, explore different aspects of design, and learn from both successes and mistakes. The supportive atmosphere and the wonderful team make Luminous a special place to work. Everyone is not just great at what they do but also warm and welcoming.
What advice would you give others starting out in the industry?
Be curious, ask questions, be a little bit annoying. Everyone around you is a potential source of learning, so don’t hesitate to ask the questions.
When do you feel most creative?
I find early mornings offer a quiet space for creativity, allowing for uncluttered thoughts and free exploration. For me, this mental freedom is crucial for the creative process. Interestingly, creativity also flourishes under pressure; deadlines can sharpen focus and spark ideas. What makes creativity interesting is its unpredictability – inspiration can strike at any time, triggered by anything from a peaceful moment to an everyday object. This unpredictability shows the importance of staying open to inspiration and recognising that creativity can come from unexpected sources or moments.
