In the spotlight: Laura Caughey, Design Director

In our latest Q&A session, we chat with Laura Caughey, Design Director at Luminous. We explore what sparked her interest in a creative role, what working at Luminous is really like, and her most memorable projects.

Who are you and what is your role at Luminous?

I’m Laura, a Design Director at Luminous. I’m a senior member of the design team. My role involves being the creative lead on a variety of brand, print, moving image and digital projects. I work directly with clients and help to oversee and support other members of the design team.

What inspired you to get into a creative role?

Being creative is an intrinsic part of my personality – it’s a constant itch that I need to scratch. I’m extremely lucky to be able to do a job that I love and that I find so fulfilling. I studied art and design throughout school and was obsessed; I even used to skip my other classes to go down to the art studio to work (I don’t endorse doing this, kids!). I had an A-level art teacher who said to me one day, “You’d be a good graphic designer because of your attention to detail”, and that always stuck with me – best career advice I ever had. I almost went into fashion, but decided after doing a foundation degree that I wasn’t cool enough, and went back to my A-level teacher’s advice – and here I am (with all the very cool graphic designers)!

What is a project you worked on recently that you are proud of?

I’m proud of all my projects, but the Focusrite rebrand has been a particular highlight. I’m a big music fan, so working on a project in that industry was a lot of fun. I also think it looks really fresh and was a joy to work on.

What do you enjoy most about working at Luminous?

I think Luminous has a really strong culture which makes you feel as if you are part of something bigger. The people are great and my team is so talented – everyone has something interesting to bring to the table. The creative process is not always easy, but I believe that if you surround yourself with great people, and have a positive attitude, you are setting yourself up for success.

What do you value in your role?

I enjoy the creative freedom that I have. When you get a new brief in, and you first start working it out, you never really know what direction it’s going to go in, and I find that really exciting. Any creative solution that we propose at Luminous is always firmly grounded in strategy and insight, and I love it when a creative solution makes visual connections that just click perfectly with the brief – it’s very satisfying. It’s also very satisfying when the client loves it too!

When do you feel most creative?

At work, when I work through the early ‘infinite possibilities’ stage and get clarity in my mind on a solid idea. Once I have an idea, I’m off and in ‘worker bee’ mode – creating is just so enjoyable and my sense of focus is heightened.

In my personal life, I always have a ‘project’ on the go. I like to illustrate and draw when I feel the urge, but I also love to be creative when cooking, baking or decorating my home. I’ve recently bought a sewing machine and plan to learn how to quilt and sew – perhaps dipping my toes back into my fashion design days!
