We designed research methodologies for each area of the report, which we applied to the largest 40 companies by market capitalisation in the FTSE 250.
To understand how well companies are integrating and reporting on ESG, Luminous’ strategy and insight team examined 40 Annual Reports from FTSE 250 companies. Using the London Stock Exchange’s industry labels, we analysed the most recent reports of the two largest companies in each industry by market cap, covering:
- ESG integration – how well ESG is integrated through the annual report
- People – workforce engagement, people strategy, training and development, gender, ethnic, age and LGBT diversity
- Governance – board skills, board and ethnic diversity, succession planning and culture
- Environment – net zero, TCFD and biodiversity
The findings provide a comprehensive picture of investor priorities and expectations, and offer unique insights into how investee companies are meeting those expectations.

At our launch event on 20 July, Luminous’ Stephen Butler, Investor Engagement and ESG Disclosure Director, Rachel Madan, Sustainability and Impact Director, and Nina Kefer, Senior Consultant, IE & ESG Disclosure, along with Lindsey Stewart, Director, Investment Stewardship Research at Morningstar and Claudia Chapman, Head of Stewardship at the Financial Reporting Council, shared the outcomes of our proprietary research. They also offered practical advice on defining, reporting and engaging with investors, as well as a deep dive into the upcoming FCA ‘comply or explain’ diversity rules for listed companies, which require UK-listed companies to indicate in their annual reports whether they have met board diversity targets.
